WATCH THE VIDEO HERE Apple’s iPhone 17 is set to debut with the A19 chip, built on TSMC’s latest third-generation 3nm technology, known as “N3P.” Analyst Jeff Pu shared this update in a recent note with Hong Kong-based Haitong Investment Bank. The move promises enhanced performance and power efficiency for the upcoming iPhone lineup, which is expected in 2024. The A19 chip will power the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, while the A19 Pro chip will feature in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. Both chips will utilize TSMC’s “N3P” process, an upgrade from the “N3E” process used for the A18 chip in the iPhone 16. The shift to “N3P” marks a refinement over its predecessor, offering increased transistor density and improved energy efficiency. These advancements suggest the iPhone 17 lineup will deliver faster speeds and longer battery life than the iPhone 16 models. In addition to the new chips, Apple is reportedly working on an ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air model with a thickness of just 6mm. Jeff Pu noted that while the slim design aligns with recent rumors, it may lead to technical compromises. Pu believes the 6mm iPhone 17 Air might not be a high-volume model due to potential production challenges. The slim design is part of Apple’s ongoing efforts to create thinner, lighter devices. However, these design choices could limit the iPhone 17 Air’s battery capacity, potentially affecting its market appeal. The iPhone 17 Pro Max may also feature a smaller notch, continuing Apple’s trend toward a more seamless display. This design change aligns with ongoing efforts to improve screen real estate and user experience. TSMC plans to begin mass production of chips using the “N3P” process in the second half of 2024.
