Media personality and Arise TV host, Rufai Oseni, has resurfaced an old video of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in which he vowed not to be part of promoting godfatherism in Nigerian politics.
The clip, recorded when Wike was governor of Rivers State, is currently circulating widely on social media amid the ongoing political tussle in the oil‑rich state.
In the video, Wike could be heard emphatically stating his position on political succession.
“The day I leave as Governor of Rivers State in the name of Almighty God, I have no power to choose a successor because the people have the right to decide who leads them,” he said.
Oseni shared the clip as Wike tours all 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State, in what many see as a bid to recapture the state’s political structure from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The political showdown between Wike and Governor Fubara has escalated in recent weeks. During one of his outings, Wike warned that he could become “politically irrelevant” if Fubara secures a second term in office.
Apparently referring to Fubara, the FCT Minister insisted that “the mistake of 2023 will not be repeated” in the 2027 elections, a veiled reference to his perceived dissatisfaction with Fubara’s leadership and political direction.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Emeka Bekee, has expressed confidence that Governor Fubara will contest in the 2027 governorship election.
Bekee made the remarks on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, as tensions persist between the FCT minister and the governor.
He painted an optimistic picture for Fubara’s political future, asserting that governors who recently defected to the APC would enjoy automatic support for second terms.
