The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the tragic killing of a 13-year-old boy, Timothy Daniel, allegedly shot by a soldier on guard duty in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026, along Akongntekong Road, Ete, sparking outrage and tension within the community.
Confirming the development, the Army Public Relations Officer, 2 Brigade, Mbiokporo, Captain Lawal Mohamed, said the matter has been officially taken over by the Military Police.
“The incident has been handled by the Military Police and is already under investigation. Due process would be followed,” he assured.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim and his 15-year-old sister, Miracle Daniel, were returning home from a crossover service at Mount Zion Full Gospel Church when the shooting occurred at approximately 12:05 a.m.
A local resident, Anthony Akpan, told Channels TV that Miracle had briefly crossed the road near the residence of the late former clan head, Clement Idemudo, a compound where expatriates are reportedly housed.
Akpan alleged that a soldier stationed at the residence made inappropriate advances toward Miracle. When she resisted and raised her voice, the soldier allegedly became aggressive and threatened her.
Timothy, who had been waiting nearby, reportedly confronted the soldier over the harassment, leading to a heated exchange.
The situation allegedly escalated when the soldier fired his weapon, fatally shooting Timothy. The teenager was said to have died on the spot.
“The soldier then retreated into the compound, while other security personnel arrived later and removed the boy’s body,” Akpan narrated.
The killing triggered panic and disrupted New Year festivities in the area. Akpan further revealed that a vehicle belonging to Obong Uyai Udoiwod, a former political adviser to the Ikot Abasi Local Government Chairman, was damaged during the unrest that followed.
