The switch of International allegiance from England to Nigeria of Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been welcomed by the Nigerian Football Federation, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 24-year-old started his career at Arsenal’s Hale End Academy, working his way up to the club’s U-18 and ultimately the U-23 side, but never got an opportunity to feature for the senior team.
Okonkwo has previously represented England at various youth levels, including the U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams, but his last appearance came in May 2019, almost seven years ago.
The Wrexham number one has been open about potentially switching from representing the Three Lions to donning the Green and White Colours of the Super Eagles.

“I need to keep playing and carry on my journey. I’m still really ambitious to play at an international level. I can still play for England or Nigeria, and I’ve not made a choice yet,” Okonkwo said in 2024.
NFF chief reacts to Okonkwo’s switch from England to Nigeria
NFF’s Director of Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, has confirmed the switch, admitting the former Sturm Graz goalie will add to Nigeria’s pool of already-talented goalkeeping options.
“The NFF is always excited to have another good player committing to Nigeria and providing an option in a particular position,” Dr Ademola Olajire told ESPN.
“Arthur Okonkwo is a prospect, and we believe the technical crew is delighted to have another option in the goalkeeping department.”
Stanley Nwabali has been Nigeria’s undisputed starter since the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast two years ago.
Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye and Amas Obasogie have all featured for the Super Eagles in that time, but none have been particularly impressive.
As such, Okonkwo could get an opportunity during the March and June International break, where the Nigerian team will be playing friendly games after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
