University lecturers in Nigeria under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will on Monday, October 13, 2025, commence a two-week industrial action.
The action followed the expiration of a two-week ultimatum the union gave the federal government to resolve pending issues with the lecturers.
The president of ASUU, Professor Chris Piwuna, informed newsmen on Sunday that the warning strike is to force the government to honour outstanding agreements and address the persistent challenges facing public universities in Nigeria.
He said the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU approved the action, with all branches of the union directed “to withdraw their voices with effect from midnight 12.01 am on Monday, October 13, 2025.”
“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” the ASUU leader told journalists in Abuja, noting that the group was forced to take this route after all attempts to engage with the government yielded no tangible results.
On September 28, 2025, ASUU issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government as part of renewed efforts by the union to push for the resolution of long-standing issues within the nation’s university system.
