The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet with the Federal Government next week, as the one-month ultimatum issued to the authorities expires on Friday, November 21, 2025.
According to a memo, the Federal Government has invited senior ASUU negotiators to a two-day meeting scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 24–25, to conclude the long-awaited renegotiation process.
In a communiqué signed by Comrade Jangfa Timothy Zhimwang, Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University, Lafia chapter, the union said it will honour the government’s invitation, though it described the timing as late.
The statement read, “We will not spurn the invitation to dialogue as a responsible union. We shall await the outcome of the meeting before taking further action.”
ASUU emphasised that it remains committed to engagement but will not hesitate to act based on the decisions of its National Executive Council (NEC).
According to the memo, the union’s NEC will convene immediately after the meeting to assess whatever offer the Federal Government presents.
The NEC will then decide on the “next line of action,” raising the possibility of fresh industrial action depending on the outcome of negotiations.
Comrade Zhimwang urged members to remain united and ready for any directive issued by the NEC.
He said, “Members should remain calm, motivated, and fully prepared. Our unity remains our greatest strength.”
The statement ended with the union’s familiar rallying cry: “The struggle continues…”
This is not the first time ASUU has set a deadline. The union previously gave the government a one-month window to conclude renegotiations.
Despite claims by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, that the government has “literally met” several of ASUU’s demands, the union strongly disagrees.
ASUU’s key demands include renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, payment of withheld salaries and a sustainable funding model for public universities.
