Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said he is gravely disturbed by reports of violent clashes between the Bachama and Tsobo communities in Lamurde local government area of Adamawa state.
Atiku said the bloodshed, destruction and suffering being inflicted on innocent citizens were unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue.
He called on the federal and Adamawa state governments to act decisively to halt the violence, protect lives and restore peace.
The former vice-president raised concern over reports that women protesters were allegedly shot and killed by soldiers of the 23rd brigade of the Nigerian army in Yola.
He said the allegation, if true, would amount to a grave atrocity and an assault on the nation’s conscience.
Abubakar said the reported denial by the army made the situation more troubling and demanded a thorough, transparent and independent investigation.
He said the claims by local residents and the counterclaims by the military must not be ignored, adding that Nigeria deserved the truth and that victims deserved justice.
He appealed to the warring communities to embrace dialogue, mutual respect and peace.
