In a statement released today, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) highlighted concerns over terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and the potential for civil unrest as key reasons for the warning. “There’s a high risk of terrorist attacks across Nigeria by various militant groups. These attacks may be indiscriminate or target foreign interests,” the advisory stated. The potential targets include public spaces such as hotels, bars, restaurants, government buildings, places of worship, markets, schools, and transport hubs. The advisory also cautioned against traveling to several states, including Adamawa, Borno, Kaduna, Rivers, and Zamfara, among others. This warning comes amid alarming data from Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics, which recorded over 2.2 million abductions between May 2023 and April 2024, with ransom payments totaling approximately N2.2 trillion. The North-West region accounted for the highest ransom payments at N1.2 trillion, while the South-East reported the lowest at N85.4 billion.
