Auto crash claims nine lives, injures nine in Jigawa

There was a fatal motor accident on Christmas Day in Beguwa village along Sankara Road, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

We gathered that the accident occurred around midday on Thursday as Christian faithful were celebrating Christmas across different parts of the state.

Eleven people were killed while nine others, sustained varying degrees of injuries

Eyewitnesses said the driver was speeding recklessly before suddenly losing control of the vehicle, leading to the deadly crash.

Confirming the incident on Thursday afternoon, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, described the crash as “very unfortunate,” adding that investigations were ongoing.

“Yes, the accident occurred today (Thursday) at Beguwa village along Sankara Road in Ringim LGA. We lost 11 people in the crash and nine others are currently receiving treatment in the hospital, including the driver,” he said.

SP Adam noted that a detailed report would be released after investigations are concluded, assuring that those responsible would be held accountable.

“As soon as the driver recovers from his injuries, we will transfer him to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for proper interrogation and prosecution.

“The Command will not hesitate to charge him for reckless driving and causing death by dangerous driving,” he added.

The police spokesperson urged motorists to prioritise safety, especially during festive periods when traffic volume increases and more lives are at risk.

He also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.
