Marvel’s tentpole Avengers franchise is celebrating a massive anniversary: 800 issues. The December 2025 issue of Avengers will mark the 800th installment of the superhero team book since it debuted in 1963. Though the series has been relaunched and renumbered multiple times over the years, Marvel’s “legacy numbering” system preserves the original lineage of the genre-changing title.

Avengers #34 is written by Jed MacKay, with art by Farid Karami. It is set to pay off years of set-up from MacKay’s extended run on the book.

The celebratory issue will also offer some big surprises for longtime Avengers fans, as Marvel seeks to celebrate a big milestone for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The current incarnation of The Avengers is the 9th volume of the series. At thirty-four issues and counting, it is already longer than several previous volumes, and the latest issue is set to mark a major turning point in the overarching story author Jed MacKay has been crafting over the past several years.

The original volume of Avengers was one of Marvel’s longest-running ongoing series when its original numbering was retired at #688 in 2018. Ending the series a year shy of its milestone 700th issue perplexed many Marvel fans at the time. Seven years later, Marvel is eager to celebrate Avengers #34 as Avengers #800 under its legacy system.

Big anniversary issues like this are increasingly infrequent in the modern Marvel era; 30-50 issues is now considered a long run, and the idea of a series lasting into the hundreds is nigh-unthinkable. So, the legacy numbering system is a bit of Marvel having its cake and eating it too, but most fans appreciate it as an acknowledgement of the publisher’s history.

Assuming Avengers continues publishing monthly indefinitely well into the future, the series would reach Avengers #1000, in legacy numbering, in roughly 2042. An eighteen-issue-per-year schedule would bring that down to just over eleven years. So, of course Marvel doesn’t want to neglect Avengers #800, which rightly deserves to be celebrated.

1963’s The Avengers #1 inaugurated the modern era of Marvel Comics, and superhero storytelling in general. Every Avengers book and every Avengers creative team since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby have carried on the legacy of that gamechanging debut. The MCU has only added to that legacy by making them Marvel’s most recognizable heroes once more.

Marvel history has been building toward this moment for 62 years. The Avengers has been a pop culture constant for over six decades, and the legacy numbering system gives Marvel Comics and Marvel fans the opportunity to recognize and celebrate that storied history, as the Avengers’ latest era reaches its apex.
