Avengers' Centurion Mech Combines Powers to Take on Godzilla

the avengers logo on fire

The Avengers just fielded their most powerful hero yet, making even the Hulk look like a second-stringer. But this new member isn’t just a new superhero… it’s every superhero.

The Avengers’ Centurion Battle Mech Takes on Godzilla

With Hulk Down, the Avengers and X-Men Combine

In today’s Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #4 – from Gerry Duggan, Paco Medina, Javier Garrón, Jesus Aburtov and Travis Lanham – the Black Panther unveils ‘Mecha Adaptoid Centurion Mark-A’ (with the ‘A’ stylized as the Avengers’ logo.) This gigantic suit unifies the powers of various heroes as the team’s final-ditch attempt to defeat Godzilla. Its abilities include:

  • The strength of Thor,
  • The elemental powers of Storm and the Human Torch,
  • The magic of Doctor Strange and Magik,
  • The superspeed of Quicksilver and Northstar,
  • The fighting skills of the Black Panther,
  • Cyclops’ optic blasts, enhanced to new levels.

The Centurion mech makes its entrance by finally causing Godzilla to miss a step, armored with a new Vibranium alloy which it’s believed will weaken the kaiju. Its potential for success is even more impressive, given Godzilla already took down a gigantic Hulk (enhanced with Pym Particles and Vibranium weaponry) and the extradimensional sorcerer Dormammu.

Our Take on Avengers’ New Battle Mech

AVENGERS' NEW BATTLE MECH FIGHTING GODZILLA

Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe has been a bombastic ride through the Marvel Universe, as the Avengers try literally everything they can think of to stop Godzilla. So far, nothing has worked. Even Wolverine and Magneto coring out Godzilla’s heart only created an injury that healed in seconds. However, with one issue left, the Avengers are assembling like never before, with their new superfast, superstrong, supereverything mech giving them a final chance at victory.

With Iron Man and War Machine running the gigantic mech and surprises like a giant-sized version of Spider-Man’s webbing on the cards, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have their best chance yet of victory. The mech is all thanks to the resources of Wakanda, using the technology of the Avengers’ old enemy the Super-Adaptoid – an artificial lifeform which could mimic the powers of any superhuman in its vicinity.

These kinds of inter-property crossover stories are often let-downs, as two corporations work to make sure that no plot detail could possibly make their IP seem weak or unsound in any way. However, Marvel has gone in totally the opposite direction, building Godzilla up as a borderline godlike entity who has crushed everything its heroes and villains had to offer.

Even with the debut of the Centurion, there’s still a major question of whether Marvel’s heroes can actually win the day (or whether, as in the recent Godzilla vs. Thor, they’ll just destroy the planet in the attempt.) With one issue to go, Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe is testing the Avengers like few villains ever have, forcing them to unleash a secret weapon more powerful than any single hero – including the Hulk.
