Avengers: Doomsday star Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi in the MCU, speaks up against the people who have been slamming comic book movies. The Marvel actor also offered some insight regarding why so many viewers are trash-talking superhero films.
In an interview with Variety, Liu revealed that he believed people aren’t giving the genre a chance anymore because it’s the popular thing to do right now. “It’s kind of fashionable now to hate on it,” said the actor. The actor acknowledged that a lot of the people criticizing comic book films do have some valid points. However, a lot of the insults that have been thrown at them have not been fair.
I think there are valid critiques of the way that movies are made, the way that production budgets are handled, I think that there are a lot of valid things to say, but this idea of s******g on superhero movies as a genre, I don’t know. I don’t know I because I am speaking as somebody who just absolutely loved watching them as a kid.
Liu also explained why superhero films have such a special place in his heart. Like many, he grew up watching comic book films. Seeing these iconic heroes, who are often seen as underdogs, saving lives and making a difference, is something that can be very uplifting for children. He added that he strongly believes in the messages that most of these films deliver.
I grew up watching superhero movies and wanting to believe that the outcasts and the nerds and the weirdos could find it in themselves to have superpowers and save the day. That’s what 12-year-old me clung on to. I still believe, for better or for worse, in the power of what those movies stand for today.
Avengers: Doomsday revolves around a multiversal collapse that Doctor Doom exploits and uses to intimidate the Marvel Universe. Although their relationships are still a little rocky after the events of Secret Wars, the Avengers have to reunite and collaborate with other superheroes such as the X-Men. Together, they race to stop the villain’s dangerous weapon, the Doomsday Catalyst.
Liu will return as Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday. The film will also see the return of several familiar faces, such as Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic), and so many more. Robert Downey Jr. will also return to the MCU in the movie. However, he won’t be reprising his role as Iron Man. The actor will be portraying Doctor Doom this time around.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
