The Latest Avenger Is an Ally of Their Biggest Rivals
In today’s Avengers #32 – from Jed MacKay, Farid Karami, Federico Blee and Cory Petit – the team battle against an army of zombies in their battle against Kang the Conqueror. When all seems lost, their new member the Impossible City arrives, revealing its true name is ‘Camelot.’
Introduced two years ago, the Impossible City is a multiversal ship stolen and brutalized by the villainous Ashen Combine, who used it to raze multiple realities. Despite being strong enough to push a planet out of orbit, the Impossible City’s damaged data centers meant it couldn’t recall its original creators… at least until they return.
After being repaired by its former allies, the Impossible City remembers that it was once the base of the Twilight Court – an Avengers-level superhero team based on Arthurian legend. Not only is the Impossible City able to bring the Court to the Avengers’ aid, but the hero now has expanded powers following its return to full health.
The City’s new powers include quantum entanglement with all its former materials, allowing it to effortlessly traverse the multiverse. It also appears to have upgraded weapons systems, boasting, “I am capable of so much more than we thought!” while raining down fire on the zombie hordes.
Who Are the Twilight Court?
This volume of Avengers has followed Kang’s pursuit of the ‘Missing Moment’ – an excised moment in time only accessible by a team of heroes patterned after very specific archetypes. While Kang has tried to use the Avengers to access the Missing Moment, he also created the Twilight Court to match the same archetypes, taking the identity of their advisor Myrddin.
Despite fighting the Avengers, the Twilight Court are true heroes, and their arrival effectively doubles the Avengers’ power at a crucial moment. With Kang using the cosmic artifact known as the Grail to end the current incarnation of the multiverse, the fate of every reality in Marvel lore is at stake, with the Impossible City (aka Camelot) coming in clutch.
Our Take on the Impossible City’s True Identity
A sentient space station the size of a city, the Impossible City was a wild addition to Avengers lore. But despite its unusual nature and immense power, the Impossible City is also one of the franchise’s most sympathetic characters – a caring being who was hijacked and injured by villains, and who was happy to simply have “guests” once again.
It’s therefore an immensely heartwarming moment to see the hero back with its family and filled with renewed purpose, charging to the rescue of the heroes who rescued it from servitude.
As sci-fi takes on Arthurian legend, it makes perfect sense that the Twilight Court would have a spacestation ‘Camelot,’ with Avengers’ creative team pulling off a twist that’s been hiding in plain sight for two years.
