WATCH THE VIDEO HERE Amnesty International has warned the Nigeria Police Force to tread carefully and avoid actions capable of sparking another nationwide protest like the #EndSARS movement of 2020. The caution came in the wake of public outrage following the tragic killing of a 13-year-old student, Alade Kehinde, by a police officer in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday. The deceased, who attended Jislord High School in Ibadan, was being driven by his father to school, alongside his twin brother and elder sibling, Emmanuel, who was to sit the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, when the incident occurred. Speaking with our correspondent on Friday, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, described the incident as a grim reminder of the police excesses that led to the #EndSARSprotests over four years ago. “What happened in October 2020 was the result of years of police brutality, and the killing of this boy is exactly the kind of tragedy that triggered the #EndSARS protests. The authorities must ensure that this case becomes a turning point. Justice must prevail to prevent another #EndSARS 2.0. “It is clear that the police have not learnt any lessons. They are gradually returning to business as usual, which is deeply unfortunate,” he stated. Sanusi criticised what he described as the government’s repeated unfulfilled promises of police reform.
