The Awolowo family has announced the death of Olusegun Awolowo Jr., prominent Nigerian lawyer and grandson of the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo.
In a deeply emotional statement on Thursday, the family described him as the “constant anchor” of their household, paying tribute to his character, values, and devotion to family and nation.
“He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather, steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family,” the statement read.
The family praised Awolowo’s lifelong dedication to national development, describing him as a selfless public servant driven by integrity and passion.
“A painfully loyal servant to Nigeria, he dedicated his life to the service of his country with vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment,” the family added.
Awolowo served as the Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2021, where he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s non-oil export strategy and strengthening trade frameworks.
Under his leadership, the council launched initiatives aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s export base, earning him respect within government and the private sector.
Born on September 27, 1963, he was widely known for his calm disposition, strategic thinking, and dedication to public service.
The statement from the Awolowo family expressed profound gratitude for his life and work, noting that he lived with purpose and left an enduring mark on the nation and those who knew him.
“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the family concluded.
Awolowo Jr. is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His passing marks the end of a life devoted to faith, family, and national development.
