Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, has accused two former northern governors of fuelling insecurity, particularly in the north.
Speaking in a viral video, Turji claimed that past political leaders in Zamfara and Sokoto states were responsible for the growing violence.
He alleged that their actions particularly the arming of vigilante groups had escalated the conflict.
“We openly say that former governors of Zamfara and Sokoto states are responsible for the calamities that befell these states,” Turji stated.
The bandit leader also denied claims made by Musa Kamarawa, a former peace negotiator, who accused him of receiving N30 million for his participation in peace talks.
“We are not politicians, and we are not tools of politicians. There is no human being backing us,” he said.
“By Allah, since I was born, I have never possessed even five million naira.
“What I am doing is not for personal gain. We were never given the N30 million you are talking about.”
He reiterated that the peace talks were aimed solely at reducing violence, not financial gain, and accused Kamarawa of betraying the trust built during those negotiations.
“I did not even receive three million naira,” Turji added, rejecting the accusation as a falsehood and a malicious attempt to discredit him.
According to Vanguard newspaper, attempts to reach the former governors for comment proved unsuccessful.
The newspaper also said the duo did not respond to calls or text messages sent to their phones at press time.
However, the newspaper quoted sources close to the former governors as dismissing Turji’s claims as “lies”.
One source stated, “Why would anyone want to place a premium on the words of a terrorist? Is it not clear that the terrorist is just trying to present himself as a victim? It is all lies.”
Another source added, “I can confirm to you that Turji is telling lies. Somebody who has serially killed is the one you want to believe. All that he has said is lies.”
According to Vanguard, the Ministry of Justice and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation also failed to comment on the matter.
Turji’s accusations come amid growing concerns about his role in the region’s insecurity.
Despite his denial of any involvement in political schemes, security agencies have consistently named him as one of the most dangerous bandit leaders operating in the north-west.
