In another incident of escalating insecurity in Kwara State, gunmen on Monday stormed the Igbo Ofe Ora community near Oke-Ode in the Ifelodun Local Government Area, abducting a housewife identified as Rukayat.
It was gathered that the gunmen also shot her brother-in-law, Abdulateef.
Speaking to Sahara Reporters, family sources confirmed on Tuesday evening that the attackers invaded the quiet agrarian village around 11 a.m., firing sporadically before whisking the woman away.
A family source, who insisted the attack was carried out by armed men he identified as “Fulani attackers,” recounted that the gunmen struck as the victim’s younger brother was returning to the village on a motorcycle.
“They went into the village… They started shooting. Everybody fled, and they took my father’s younger brother’s wife away,” the source said.
Abdulateef, who stays with the family, was shot and seriously injured in the attack.
He was initially taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital but was later moved to a private hospital due to the ongoing doctors’ strike at the government facility.
The abductors have since contacted the family and are demanding a ₦100 million ransom for Rukayat’s release.
This attack adds to a recent spate of violent crimes in Kwara State. The Ifelodun Local Government Area, where this incident occurred, has recently faced intense pressure from criminal groups, including the recent abduction and subsequent escape of the traditional ruler of Bayagan, the Ojibara of Bayagan, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, in a separate incident.
