That hope has now been officially crushed, as DC has provided explicit confirmation of why the couple will never truly work.

After several months of delay, Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s Batman #162, continuing their Hush 2 storyline, has finally arrived. The issue is a wild ride from start to finish, and if it could be summed up in two words, they would be absolutely feral.

Amid the action-packed narrative is a poignant moment between Catwoman and Batman, where the two reveal why they don’t and will never work as a couple. It may be time for BatCat shippers to bury their hopes and dreams.

Batman & Catwoman Reveal Why Their Attempts at a Relationship Always Fail

For those not up to speed on Hush 2, the short recap is that Hush has returned, manipulating events so Batman must confront not only his villainous foe but also the rest of the Bat-Family. During one of these intense fights, Catwoman corners Bruce and forces him to stop fighting and actually talk.

During their discussion about Hush and his schemes, their relationship comes up. Selina states, “I think about why we could never make it work,” and explains that Bruce has built walls around his heart to protect the ten-year-old boy who witnessed his parents’ murder. These defenses make it extremely difficult for him to form lasting connections.

Batman offers his own perspective on why their relationship has always struggled, saying, “I think about how much you know about me and how often I feel like I do not know you at all.” While their reasons differ slightly, both highlight a deep disconnect that has repeatedly prevented them from becoming an endgame couple.

It’s not just the reasons Bruce and Selina give that make them unlikely to be endgame, but the fact that they quietly disagree with each other. For instance, Selina says Bruce has built walls, yet he insists she knows everything about him. This contradiction underscores that their perceptions of the problem differ, making resolution difficult.

The same applies to Bruce’s reasoning. He feels he knows nothing about Selina, yet she counters that he probably knows her better than anyone. If they cannot even agree on the source of their relationship’s failures, it seems unlikely they will ever find a way to fix the disconnect that keeps sabotaging their attempts at lasting love.

While Hush 2 paints a bleak picture for the BatCat romance, some fans argue that the storyline regresses character development. This disconnect between Bruce and Selina could be interpreted as a narrative setback rather than a definitive statement on their future. In other words, their relationship’s challenges in this arc may not mark the end of hope for Batman x Catwoman.
