Bauchi governor replies presidency, says criticism is not a threat

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has dismissed claims that he threatened President Bola Tinubu, clarifying that his comments were constructive criticism to address policies he believes could harm Nigerians.

Governor Mohammed’s response follows a statement from the presidency urging him to retract his purported “threat” over the controversial Tax Reform Bills.

The presidency referenced Mohammed’s earlier remark, “We will show President Tinubu our true colour,” calling it unstatesmanlike and divisive.

The governor, however, refuted the interpretations, stating that his comments were intended to highlight the negative impact of the proposed tax reforms on Northern Nigeria and advocate for fairness.

“If you ignore the cries of the people, you are inviting anarchy,” Governor Mohammed had said during a Christmas event in Bauchi.

“These reforms are not helping Northern Nigeria. How do you expect us to pay salaries and build roads when you are taking away our revenue sources? This is unacceptable,” he added.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, titled, “Re: Presidency’s Misleading Statement on Governor Bala Mohammed’s Remarks on Tax Reforms,” the governor clarified that his words were cautionary, not confrontational.

“It is mischievous to take Governor Bala Mohammed’s honest advice about the dangers of implementing unfavourable policies as a threat to the presidency,” the statement read.

Governor Mohammed emphasized his deep respect for the presidency and reiterated his focus on fostering dialogue and advocating policies that protect Nigerians, particularly those in economically disadvantaged regions.

The statement also noted that Mohammed’s concerns align with some APC governors who have similarly criticized the proposed reforms.

He urged the presidency to embrace constructive criticism rather than dismiss it as hostility.

“We urge the Federal Government to prioritize dialogue and inclusivity over selective criticism and divisive rhetoric,” the statement concluded.

Governor Bala Mohammed affirmed his commitment to collaborating with the presidency to address national challenges and ensure the nation’s overall growth and development.
