A police inspector attached to the Mobile Police Unit (MOPOL) has allegedly shot and killed a soldier in Futuk, in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the police officer was escorting a truck allegedly loaded with mineral resources belonging to a Chinese mining company. The minerals were suspected to have been illegally mined from the Yalo mining sites.
The incident occurred when troops stationed at a checkpoint in Futuk attempted to stop the truck. The driver reportedly refused to comply, prompting the soldiers to pursue and intercept the vehicle.
Following an altercation between the security personnel, the police officer allegedly shot one of the soldiers.
The soldier was rushed to a hospital in Gombe State, where he was later confirmed dead.
The Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 33 Artillery Brigade, Major Atang Hallet Solomon, confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details, citing an ongoing investigation.
“Our relationship with the police remains cordial, and a joint investigation is underway to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident,” Major Solomon said.
