Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president, has been released from custody in the United Kingdom and has returned to Nigeria.
According to BBC, Beatrice arrived back in the country about three months ago.
In March 2023, Ike Ekweremadu, Beatrice Ekweremadu and Obinna Obeta, a medical doctor, were convicted for conspiring to traffic a young man for organ harvesting in violation of the United Kingdom’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.
The conviction was the first recorded under the modern slavery legislation.
On May 5, 2023, the court sentenced the former senate president to nine years and eight months in prison, Beatrice to four years and six months, and Obeta to a 10-year jail term.
Jeremy Johnson, the trial judge, ruled that Beatrice should serve half of her sentence in custody and the remainder on licence.
The judge also directed that the time she spent on electronically monitored curfew and on remand should be credited when calculating her custodial term.
The court found that the Ekweremadus arranged for a young Nigerian man to travel to the UK in February 2022 to facilitate the removal of his kidney for their ill daughter, Sonia.
The evidence before the court showed that the young man was allegedly promised employment in the UK before travelling.
The victim later reported the matter to the police in May 2022, stating that he had been brought into the country for the purpose of an organ transplant.
