The Roses, Benedict Cumberbatch’s divisive dark comedy, is coming to Hulu and Disney+, and a release date has now been revealed. The film is a remake of the 1981 Warren Adler novel and 1989 film The War of the Roses.
Aside from the Marvel Cinematic Universe actor, the 2025 version also stars Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Allison Janney, Hala Finley, Wells Rappaport, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, Belinda Bromilow, and Akie Kotabe.
Disney announced that The Roses will be released on Hulu, as well as the Hulu on Disney+ bundle, on Thursday, November 20.
The film was released in theaters on August 29 and, despite the star power in the cast, made $51.5 million at the box office on a $30 million budget. On opening weekend, it debuted at No. 5, with Weapons, Jaws (50th anniversary re-release), Caught Stealing, and Freakier Friday beating it at the box office.
Reviews were mixed, with critics giving The Roses a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.
By comparison, the original War of the Roses film has an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $160 million at the box office on a $26 million budget. It also debuted at No. 1 on the opening weekend.
The War of the Roses was even nominated for three Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture, Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Michael Douglas), and Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Kathleen Turner).
Along with Douglas and Turner, the Danny DeVito-directed film also starred DeVito, Marianne Sägebrecht, Sean Astin, Heather Fairfield, G. D. Spradlin, Peter Donat, and Dan Castellaneta.
Like The War of the Roses, The Roses centers on Cumberbatch and Colman’s characters, Theo and Ivy Rose, whose marriage starts crumbling despite seemingly having a strong relationship.
The film was directed by Jay Roach, who has directed Austin Powers, Meet the Parents, Trumbo, and Bombshell. He also produced Borat, 50 First Dates, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, among others.
While The Roses wasn’t a box office success and received mixed reviews, its release on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ will allow the film to reach a wider audience. In contrast, The War of the Roses isn’t streaming anywhere, though it can be purchased and rented digitally, and is available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray.
However, the 2025 remake, The Roses, is about to make its streaming debut and will introduce the story to a new audience.
