The Benin Republic government has released a Nigerian cleric, Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, from detention.
The cleric was released on Thursday following a presidential pardon by President Patrice Talon.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, confirmed this in a statement issued by her media aide, Dr. Magnus Eze, in Abuja.
She said Egbaji, a businessman from Cross River, was detained under dehumanising conditions at a hospital in Cotonou.
According to the minister, the cleric spent over two years in detention and his health deteriorated before he was eventually transferred to prison custody.
