Benin forward Junior Olaitan has written a public apology to Goztepe fans to placate them after he shared a picture of himself and Victor Osimhen exchanging jerseys after their Super Lig game against Galatasaray on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Galatasaray and Goztepe clashed on Saturday, in what was the biggest Super Lig games of the season. Going into the tie, Goztepe were expected to put up a solid fight, as they had lost just one game all season, while Galatasaray had won all but one of their domestic fixtures.
However, the defending champions made light work of the tie, putting three past Goztepe to see out a 3-1 win.
Osimhen was was one of the stars of the show, as he grabbed a goal for the Cimon to lead them to victory.
After the game, Benin forward Olaitan, who got 61 minutes of action for Goztepe, met with Osimhen to exchange jerseys. And they proceeded to take pictures, which the former shared on social media.
But, that picture drew the ire of Goztepe fans, as Olaitan was heavily criticized on social media. Following the backlash, the 23-year-old forward took to social media to apologize.
What Junior Olaitan Said About His Jersey Swap With Victor Osimhen
Junior Olaitan is from Benin. But just like Victor Osimhen, he grew up in Lagos. In fact, they both speak Yoruba. So it was only natural that both of them would have a moment together.
“I wish everyone a good week. We, as a team, are very disappointed that we couldn’t win the Galatasaray match. We fought hard, but unexpected interventions occurred, and unfortunately, we lost the match,” Olaitan wrote.
“I have a long-standing friendship with the opposing player, Osimhen, from Lagos, Nigeria, and when we met after many years, we wanted to swap jerseys.
“I apologize to everyone for doing something that went against the culture of this club. Now we have a Europe to go to. Let’s all unite and walk towards our goal,” he added.
Goztepe currently sit 7th in the Super Lig, with 16 points after 10 games, while Galatasaray lead the league with 28 points after 10 games.
