The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) has confirmed the birth of 15 babies and 122 ongoing pregnancies at a newly established Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp for victims from Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area.

BSEMA’s Head of Administration, Mr. Donald Komgbenda, made the disclosure on Monday in Makurdi during a media briefing.

He revealed that a total of 4,685 IDPs have been registered at the camp so far.

“As of today, we have about 4,685 individuals and 1,739 households registered. We have 2,960 females, out of which 122 are pregnant, and 1,725 males,” he said.

Despite the growing population, Komgbenda noted that the camp continues to face serious infrastructural challenges, including the absence of electricity, clean water, and toilets.

“This place is a market; there is no light, water, or toilets, but discussions are ongoing to resolve the challenges,” he stated.

He added that the agency is currently supplying six trucks of water daily to cater to the basic water needs of the displaced persons.

Komgbenda also commended donor agencies for their support in helping the IDPs attain a minimal level of comfort amid the difficult conditions.
