Benue No Longer Food Basket Of The Nation – Niger Govt Declares

According to Niger State Commissioner for Agriculture, Musa Bosso, the state has overtaken Benue State as (the food basket of the nation) Nigeria’s foremost agricultural producer.

Bosso asserted this while hailing the state’s recent stride in agricultural produce.

Speaking during the 2024 World Food Day celebration at the Legbo Kutigi Conference Centre in Minna, Bosso highlighted the significant advancements in agriculture achieved under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Bago.

In his address at the event, Governor Bago, represented by Deputy Governor Garba Yakubu, emphasized the state’s ambitious agricultural initiatives, asserting that Niger is now equipped to provide food not only for its inhabitants but for the entire nation.

He revealed that 3 million hectares of arable land have been allocated for agricultural purposes, alongside various infrastructure investments aimed at enhancing food production.

Bago referenced the celebration theme, “Safer Foods and Better Health,” underscoring its importance in light of the economic difficulties, insecurity, and climate change that have intensified food insecurity throughout Nigeria.

He reaffirmed that his administration, guided by the New Niger Agenda, is dedicated to transforming Niger into a leading agricultural state through sustainable development.

“We will explore about 3 million hectares of arable land with abundant water bodies, 23 grazing reserves, and 94 forest reserves to harness our green economy potential,” the governor said.

Governor Bago noted that the state has undertaken substantial investments in agricultural equipment, which encompass 1,000 John Deere tractors, 500 Case tractors, and 500 combine harvesters.

Furthermore, he mentioned that there are plans to establish an Agro-processing Free Zone in proximity to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna.

Governor Bago urged international partners to continue supporting Niger’s agricultural development through collaborations that enhance infrastructure, modernize farming practices, and promote value addition across key crops like rice, maize, cassava, and sorghum.

The governor assured that these efforts would eliminate hunger and improve the livelihoods of the state’s residents.

Again, Bosso conveyed his pride in the agricultural accomplishments of the state, asserting that Niger State has surpassed Benue in terms of food production.

He attributed this success to Governor Bago’s policies and dedication to enhancing the agricultural sector.

“This is a unique moment for us, as it marks the first time in nearly 20 years that Niger State is celebrating World Food Day,” Bosso said.

He urged investors to take advantage of the vast opportunities available in Niger State, pledging that Niger will continue to lead in food production and contribute to national food security and export markets.
