SUSPECTED herdsmen launched an attack on the Otobi community in the Akpa district of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, this evening.

The incident reportedly began around 5:30 p.m., according to Kennedy Angbo, the member representing Otukpo-Akpa Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly.

Angbo, who is from the Akpa district, stated that while the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, several people may have been killed, and hundreds of residents have fled the area.

A resident, Edwin Emma, also confirmed the ongoing attack, raising alarm over the situation. “We are under attack by herdsmen in Otobi. My wife and children are fleeing as we speak. Please call for help,” he said in a distressed call.

Otobi, which houses the Federal Ministry of Water Resources’ Multipurpose Water Dam, has suffered two attacks this April alone.

A security guard at the dam was reportedly killed just days before the current incident.

As of the time of filing this report, police authorities have not released an official statement.

Meanwhile, in nearby Plateau State—also located in Nigeria’s North Central region—over 100 lives have been lost in the past two weeks due to violent attacks by armed groups in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas.
