Warning: SPOILERS ahead for the end of Black Phone 2!Black Phone 2 star Mason Thames has revealed ideas for a third installment after the sequel’s successful $123 million box office run. The story of Black Phone 2 offered a very different tale from that of the first installment, with the Grabber (Ethan Hawke) targeting Finney (Thames) from the afterlife. The film received positive reviews alongside its box office success.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns for Black Phone 2, Thames revealed his ideas for a potential Black Phone 3, specifically how Finney and Gwen’s story could continue. He says he’d want to see his character in therapy, processing what happened in the first two movies, potentially with his sister. Check out what Thames said below:
ScreenRant: Now, you talked about the wider Black Phone universe. I know Joe Hill has talked about kicking around some ideas of what a third film could look like. Much like the first film, I am just as happy to leave it here, if not pick up with more. What do you think? Mason Thames: Yeah, I mean same thing with the first film and going into the sequel, I didn’t know how they were going to do it. I think both of those movies stand alone, they’re both a singular story, and I think if there’s another story to be told, I think they’re going to do great. What I’d want to see from a third one, if they were to do one, is Finn in some therapy. Finn in some deep, deep therapy, because that boy needs it. And some hugs.

Mason Thames: Yeah, after that, I think they need family therapy. [Laughs]
Black Phone 2 ended with Gwen finding the bodies of the boys the Grabber had murdered buried under the ice, freeing their souls and allowing them to attack the antagonist. The child murderer’s spirit was pulled into the lake, signifying that he was defeated. However, since the movie was successful at the box office, a sequel could still happen.
Author Joe Hill, who penned the original 2004 short story, previously stated he could see sequels to Black Phone 2 happening if the movie was a box office success. Given it made $123 million against a $30 million budget, it exceeded the amount of money it needed to justify another movie. This indicates the Grabber isn’t gone for good.
Writer-director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill expressed interest in the idea of Black Phone 3 happening, but stated they’d only make the movie if they had an idea that could surpass the sequel. Hawke is also open to coming back as the Grabber, hoping to explore the more supernatural elements of the character now that he’s dead.
As for Thames, his idea would ground a sequel in Finney and Gwen’s experiences. This would give the movie a more human-centric tale, as it would emphasize just how much the events of the previous two have impacted their psyches. It would also be a creative way to bring the Grabber back, using him as a symbol of confronting trauma.
While a third movie hasn’t been confirmed as of writing, the box office success of Black Phone 2 makes it possible for a sequel to happen. While Thames’ hopes have potential for the future, it’s ultimately up to Derrickson if the next film will be made, and what ideas it’ll bring to the table.
