Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has lamented that Nigeria’s former colonial ruler, Britain, left behind the deep-rooted problems of tribalism and religious bigotry.
George made the remark on Friday during an interview where he responded to a question on the state of the nation; he said that since independence, nearly every national challenge has been influenced by these entrenched divisions.
According to him, “When the British left this country, they left behind two major evils: tribalism and religious bigotry.
“When you were born, did you ask Almighty God where you wanted to come from? Whether to be Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani or anything else?
“It is this unfortunate legacy they left behind, and from then until now, everything revolves around it. How does this help in improving the lives of our people?
“I want to appeal to the APC government: while the nation is battling severe hunger and growing anger, they must take urgent action, especially to ensure the youth are meaningfully engaged.
“We are approaching an election year, and when all these issues combine, it becomes a time bomb,” he said.
