BORNO: Tinubu mourns fallen soldiers, calls for investigation

President Bola Tinubu today expressed his condolences for the soldiers who lost their lives during an attack on an army base in Sabon Gida, Damboa, Borno State.

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) carried out a pre-dawn strike using trucks and motorcycles last Saturday at the Sabon Gari base in Damboa.

According to military sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the attackers set fire to the base and military vehicles.

Fighter jets from Maiduguri, located 100 kilometers (62 miles) away, targeted the assailants as they retreated.

In a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed deep sympathy to military authorities following the loss of six courageous soldiers in the January 4 attack.

He called for a “thorough investigation” to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and to ensure it serves as a lesson to prevent future incidents.

“This decisive action by the Army showcases our military’s readiness to confront and eliminate threats to our national security. Their efforts affirm our commitment to eradicating terrorism and banditry, paving the way for a peaceful and secure future for all Nigerians,” the President stated.

He extended heartfelt gratitude and condolences to the military and security forces on behalf of a grateful nation, stating, “Your sacrifices and dedication do not go unnoticed, and we stand firmly behind you in this ongoing battle against these threats.”

The Commander-in-Chief commended the armed forces for their rapid and effective response, particularly the air force, which conducted successful retaliatory strikes.

Tinubu noted that these targeted air raids led to the significant neutralization of numerous terrorists and the destruction of their assets as they attempted to escape.

The President urged the military to take proactive measures against bandits and terrorists, especially in the Northwest, where these criminals continue to endanger the lives and homes of innocent villagers.

He also called on Nigerians and the media to support the military’s efforts to restore peace and security in the country.
