BORNO: Tinubu, US condemn bomb blasts, mourn victims

The incident, which saw four suicide bombers detonating improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Gwoza, located in the North-East Nigeria, resulted in the tragic death of 18 individuals.

Subsequently, the Presidency released a statement expressing sympathy for the families of the victims and the Borno State Government.

The President’s message of condolences was conveyed in a statement issued today by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale.

President Tinubu described the attacks as desperate acts of terrorism and a clear indication of the pressure being exerted on terrorists and the successes in reducing their capability to launch offenses, as stated in the message.

Tinubu maintained that those responsible for senseless violence will face the consequences and assured that such cowardly attacks are isolated incidents, with his government refusing to allow the country to descend into a period marked by fear, sorrow, and bloodshed.

The Commander-in-Chief reiterated that his administration is implementing necessary measures to safeguard citizens and emphasized that efforts will be intensified to eradicate those who disrupt the nation, jeopardize lives, and disturb public order.

In a similar vein, the United States Government condemned the attack, deeming it as horrific.

The Mission stated in a message today that the United States strongly condemns the horrific assaults that occurred in Gwoza, Borno State on June 29, emphasizing the cruel and heartless disregard for human life displayed in these acts of violence.

The Mission extended heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

These atrocious attacks serve as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by terrorism in the region, and the Mission reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian government to combat terrorism and bring the perpetrators of these despicable acts to justice.

The assault in Borno State yesterday stands out as one of the deadliest reported in recent months, resulting in injuries to over 30 individuals, ranging from abdominal ruptures to fractures.

The Director-General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Barkindo Saidu,  recounted witnessing the initial blast during a marriage celebration, followed by another explosion near the General Hospital in the area.

Subsequent to the attacks, the military has implemented a curfew in Gwoza Local Government Area.
