Borno: Zulum begins North’s first metro rail network

This initiative marks the first of such project undertaken by any of the 19 northern state governments in Nigeria.

The initial phase will feature 12 designated terminals in Maiduguri, linking key markets, schools, public spaces, and economically important sites.

This project, which has the potential to expand to include local government areas in the future, aims to enhance the movement of passengers and goods while promoting economic activities and corridors throughout the state.

During an inspection of the proposed rail terminals and routes with the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, highlighted that feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are currently underway to ensure the project’s successful execution.

The commissioner noted that once completed, this project will improve transportation, revitalize the economy, create jobs, and enhance the city’s transportation network.

Zulum’s innovative intra-city rail system is intended to provide a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation alternative for residents.

It will also complement other ongoing transportation infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East, West, and South ring roads, linking the low-cost communities of Auno, Molai, Polo, and Shagari.

Earlier, Zulum’s administration introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidised rates for Maiduguri residents, aimed at alleviating the impact of rising transportation and living costs following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

He has also initiated various infrastructure projects across both urban and rural areas of the state.

Zulum’s commitment to infrastructure development in Borno is part of a broader strategy to restore peace and prosperity in the region following the impacts of over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.
