Brandon Sanderson has always been outspoken about his favorite video games, and has spoken very fondly about the long-awaited indie sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, since its unexpected release earlier this year. Many Sanderson fans would guess that Silksong is easily his favorite sequel to release this year, but his Halloween costume selection suggests otherwise.
In their annual Sanderson family Halloween episode on YouTube, Brandon Sanderson, his wife Emily, and his son all dressed up as characters from one of Sanderson’s favorite sequel releases of 2025, Once Upon A KATAMARI. Sanderson said he could have described their costumes as being from “a highly anticipated sequel to a favorite game” to make fans think it was Silksong.

Sanderson Wants To Know Why More People Aren’t Talking About Once Upon A Katamari
Sanderson and family showed up to their annual Halloween episode dressed as the “Queen and King of All Cosmere,” a play on the KATAMARI characters, the King and Queen of All Cosmos—with their son as the Prince, of course. The costumes are dedicated to the newly released KATAMARI game, Once Upon A KATAMARI, which launched on October 23, 2025.
Sanderson fans had been speculating over the past week or so leading up to Halloween over what exactly the Sandersons would dress up as this year, which has become a bit of a Halloween tradition. Typically, Brandon will choose a video game-themed costume ensemble for his family, despite his wife not being much of a gamer.
Many players expected that they’d be dressing up as Hollow Knight: Silksong characters given Sanderson’s outspoken love for the indie hit, but to many’s surprise, Brandon opted for another favorite, KATAMARI. “A new KATAMARI game came out last week, I don’t know why you’re not all talking about that,” Sanderson jests.

Once Upon A Katamari Is Getting Great Reviews In Its First Week
Sanderson’s pick for Halloween costume makes a lot of sense if you’ve followed his posts discussing video games over the years. Once Upon A KATAMARI is the first new console entry in the Katamari Damacy series in 14 years, though there have been several remakes and remasters in that time.
Once Upon A KATAMARI currently has a 79 Metacritic score and Very Positive reviews on Steam so far, and is available to play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. Brandon Sanderson highly recommends checking it out, even if it’s a far cry from Hollow Knight: Silksong.
