Aviation unions under the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) have suspended a planned indefinite strike scheduled for Monday, citing progress in pay negotiations with relevant authorities.
The unions delivered the decision in a joint statement on Friday, signed by AbdulRasaq Saidu (secretary-general of ANAP), Odinaka Igbokwe (deputy general secretary of NUATE), Frances Akinjole (principal deputy general secretary of ATSSSAN) and Alo Lawrence (general secretary of AUPCTRE).
In their communiqué, the unions noted that “unfavourable circumstances” had compelled them to issue a strike notice, but added that recent “positive developments”, including a “no objection” letter from the Budget Office to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, have prompted their decision to call off the planned action.
They highlighted that NAMA management has assured staff that new remuneration will be paid alongside August salaries.
“In order to demonstrate good faith, our unions have taken the decision to defer the strike action scheduled to commence on Monday 11th August, 2025, pending the state of affairs on the subject matter at the end of August, 2025,” the statement read.
Staff were encouraged to remain hopeful as negotiations continue.
Early media reports had confirmed the unions had issued a seven-day ultimatum beginning July 31 over eight-month delays in implementing a newly agreed salary structure; failure to resolve the matter would have led to a nationwide service withdrawal beginning August 11.
