Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, was attacked in the early hours of Wednesday, 26 November 2025, by suspected bandits attempting to breach the school premises and overrun the community.
Community sources told Vanguard that members of the Kiri Vigilante Group mobilised swiftly at the sound of gunfire and confronted the attackers, launching what residents described as a fierce pushback operation.
Sources initially claimed that during the assault, students had been taken by the gunmen but were subsequently rescued after vigilantes chased the attackers into nearby bushes.
One vigilante member was reportedly killed while defending the community, while one resident also died from stray bullets during the rescue operation.
However, the Chairman of Kabba/Bunu LGA, Zaccheus Dare Micheal, denied claims that any student was abducted, insisting the attackers were repelled before breaching the school defences.
In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Michael described the bandit operation as foiled and the reports of abduction as fabricated.
He said, “No student was abducted at any point. Armed attackers made an attempt to breach the school, but were resisted and successfully repelled by the Joint Task Force Kabba/Bunu.”
Further clarifying the incident, Omofa John, CPS to the chairman, said, “The attention of the Kabba/Bunu Local Government Authority has been drawn to reports circulating on Facebook and other social media platforms about the attack at the Kiri axis of Bunu District.”
He maintained that bandits met strong resistance, adding, “The bandits attacked, but they were resisted and repelled by our security team.”
He also confirmed fatalities, but tied the deaths to stray gunfire, not kidnap operations.
The LGA added that tactical mop-up operations had begun immediately after the assault, reassuring residents that normalcy had been restored under strict monitoring.”
The chairman’s office issued a direct warning to social users and publishers spreading unverified claims, threatening prosecution for offenders.
John announced emphatically, “We urge the public to desist from circulating unverified information on social media. Offenders will face the full wrath of the law.”
