The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is expected to charge former Minister of Labour and Productivity and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chris Ngige, in court today over alleged violations related to his ongoing investigation.
Ngige was reportedly arrested on Wednesday in what a family source who spoke with Vanguard described as a “commando-style raid” at his residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road in Asokoro, Abuja.
According to the source, about 20 EFCC operatives from the agency’s Wuse II Zonal Office stormed Ngige’s home and whisked him away without allowing him to change clothes.
“He was taken in his pyjamas,” the family member said.
Before his arrest, Ngige had been under administrative bail and had been cooperating with the EFCC, including attending previous questioning sessions.
He was instructed to submit his travel documents as part of the bail conditions, but had embarked on a medical trip to the United States. While en route, he reportedly lost his passport in the United Kingdom and was forced to cancel the trip.
Ngige later secured emergency travel documents from the Nigerian High Commission in London to return to Abuja.
Upon his return, Ngige reportedly drafted a letter to notify the EFCC of the passport loss and explain why he had been unable to return the document as requested. However, he had not submitted the letter before the EFCC operatives arrived and arrested him.
He was said to be surprised by the arrest, maintaining that he had not breached his bail terms and had been fully cooperative with the agency.
According to Vanguard, the EFCC plans to charge Ngige to court, where his lawyers are expected to make submissions for bail.
