BREAKING: Embattled Chairman Abure Takes Action as Obi, Otti Move to Reclaim Labour Party

The embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has asserted that there is no leadership vacuum within the party.

Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, Abure declared that any claims suggesting a leadership void are baseless and legally unfounded.

“There is no vacuum in the leadership of the Labour Party. The Supreme Court judgement did not say the tenure of the current NWC under my leadership has expired,” Abure stated.

His remarks came in response to calls from party members notably 2023 presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, who have made a move to reclaim the party’s leadership following last week’s Supreme Court ruling on the leadership of thr party.

Obi and Otti have called for an emergency NEC meeting on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Abuja, with the goal of reorganizing the party’s structure.

A notice jointly issued by Obi and Otti confirmed that the NEC meeting would be followed by an interactive town hall session at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel with key stakeholders and party members

Abure also took aim at what he termed an “illegal” effort to challenge the party’s leadership. “The so-called National Caretaker Committee is an illegal body unknown to any law guiding the Labour Party,” he remarked, criticizing those who seek to disrupt the party’s unity.

“What happened in Umuahia was not a NEC meeting; as such, the so-called caretaker committee is an illegal entity. The purported caretaker committee is just a meddlesome interloper whose sole purpose is to destroy our party,” he added.
