A UBA Bank branch on Lagos Island is currently on fire, with flames reportedly engulfing parts of the building.

A video obtained by POLITICS NIGERIA captured thick smoke billowing from a six-storey building on Lagos Island, sparking panic across the busy commercial hub.

In the clip, some individuals, yet to be identified, were seen attempting to jump from the building, while others were rescued with ladders by residents and passersby.

Crowds gathered outside the building as chaos ensued.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in a statement signed by Deputy Controller General Ogabi Olajide, said its operatives were battling the blaze at Afriland Tower, located on Broad Street.

“A fire outbreak is currently being battled at a six-storey building on Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island. The call was received at 13:38 hours, and fire crews from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and Sari Iganmu Fire Station responded,” the statement partly read.

The fire reportedly started in the inverter room in the basement before smoke spread across multiple floors, engulfing the structure.

“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have doused the earlier panic prior to the arrival of first responders,” the statement added.

As of press time, no casualties had been officially confirmed.
