The Nigerian military has confirmed that officers arrested over an alleged coup plot against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been identified and investigated.

Politics Nigeria reports that the Defence Headquarters said the probe into the matter has been completed.

The investigation covered sixteen military officers taken into custody in October 2025 for acts described as serious misconduct and violations of military rules.

In an official statement released on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, announced that the report of the investigation has now been submitted to the appropriate military authorities for further action.

The Armed Forces explained that the inquiry followed internal procedures and examined the conduct of the officers involved. It said some of them were linked to actions that went against the core values and professional obligations of the military.

According to the military, the findings pointed to attempts by certain officers to weaken constitutional authority and disrupt the chain of command within the Armed Forces.

Part of the statement read:
“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN,”

The Defence Headquarters added that officers with cases to answer will face trial before relevant military judicial bodies. These proceedings will be conducted under the Armed Forces Act and other existing service laws.

Military authorities stressed that discipline remains a key pillar of national security. They said the institution will not tolerate any act that threatens democracy or undermines the authority of the Federal Government.

The Armed Forces also reassured Nigerians that the situation is under control and that all actions taken so far are in line with military regulations and national interest.

Recall that, POLITICS NIGERIA had earlier reported the arrest of several officers in October 2025 following intelligence reports of an alleged plot to destabilize the Tinubu-led government.

At the time, the Defence Headquarters promised a thorough investigation, a process that has now been concluded with the submission of its findings.
