Senate President Godswill Akpabio made a blunder during Wednesday’s Senate plenary when he mistakenly stated that Nigeria was proud of how President Bola Tinubu was buried.
POLITICS NIGERIA understands that the former Akwa Ibom governor meant to refer to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The whole country is proud of what this administration has done in the way and manner President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was honoured and was buried,” Akpabio said during his remarks on the floor of the Senate.
The slip immediately drew slow murmurs across the chamber. Akpabio, realising the gaffe, quickly corrected himself, clarifying that he meant Buhari, not Tinubu.
The session had been specially convened to honour Buhari, who passed away on July 13, while receiving treatment at a London hospital.
Buhari had served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier ruled the country as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985.
His burial took place on July 15 in his hometown Daura, Katsina State.
