The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suspended the planned enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy in compliance with a subsisting court order.
The enforcement of the policy was scheduled to commence on January 2, 2026.
However, Benjamin Hundeyin, force spokesperson, said in a statement on Thursday that the implementation of the policy has been put on hold.
He explained that the suspension will remain in effect until the court hears and determines the substantive suit or lifts the existing order.
The decision follows an ex parte injunction issued in December 2025 by a Delta State High Court restraining the police from implementing the policy across the country.
The suit was instituted by Israel Joe against Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), the police, and the Delta State commissioner of police.
The development comes amid a prolonged disagreement between the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the police over the planned enforcement.
On December 15, 2024, the police had announced that enforcement would resume on January 2, 2026, citing an increase in vehicle-related crimes nationwide.
The NBA had faulted the announcement, accusing the police of disregarding a court order barring enforcement of the policy.
The association described the move as “amounts to executive recklessness” and said it portrayed the police leadership as “lacking in respect for the court, the rule of law, and due process of law”.
The police, in response, maintained that no court had declared the policy unlawful or permanently restrained the force from enforcing it.

Hundeyin said the police have now been formally served with the interim injunction restraining enforcement.
He disclosed that the force has entered appearance in the suit and filed an application seeking the vacation of the order.
According to him, the matter has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.
“In line with constitutional obligations and respect for judicial authority, the Nigeria Police Force has entered appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order,” the statement reads.
“The court has adjourned the case to 20th January 2026 for further proceedings.
“Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, affirms that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while discharging its primary mandate of protecting lives and property.
“The Force will continue to deploy lawful, intelligence-driven strategies to address security challenges and safeguard public safety across the country.”
