The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a five-day nationwide warning strike to press home its demands from the Federal Government.

In a statement on Thursday, the General Secretary of the FCT Administration’s Association of Resident Doctors, Agbor Affiong, confirmed the decision, which was taken after an online National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that dragged into the early hours of Thursday.

According to the resolution, the strike will commence at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, and will run until Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

“All centres are hereby directed to duly inform their hospital managements and continue to press home our collective demands,” the statement read.

Affiong explained that the NEC members unanimously agreed that the warning strike was necessary after several unresolved issues affecting the welfare of doctors across the country.

“Arising from the NARD E-NEC meeting held on Wednesday, the 10th of September, 2025, which extended into the early hours of Thursday, the 11th of September, 2025, the NEC members unanimously resolved to embark on a five-day warning strike,” the communiqué stated.

The strike, expected to paralyse activities in teaching and specialist hospitals nationwide, comes at a time when Nigeria’s healthcare system is already under strain due to a shortage of personnel and inadequate funding.

Resident doctors, who make up the bulk of the medical workforce in federal health institutions, have in recent years staged repeated industrial actions over unpaid allowances, poor welfare conditions, and unresolved salary arrears.

With this declaration, patients may face service disruptions in critical facilities unless a swift intervention is reached between the doctors and the government.
