Breaking: Rivers Assembly Transmit Notice Of Gross Misconducts To Fubara, Deputy

Siminalayi Fubara Rivers

Hours after receiving documents detailing alleged gross misconduct against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara from 26 members of the state’s House of Assembly, Speaker Martin Amaewhule has officially transmitted the allegations to both the Governor and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The notice of allegations was dated January 8, 2026 and signed by Amaewhule. The documents, which reference Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, lay out accusations that could lead to the impeachment of the state’s top executives.

In the letter addressed to the Governor, Amaewhule informed Fubara that he had received a formal notice of allegations dated January 5, 2026, signed by 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Amaewhule emphasised that the 26 signatories represented two-thirds of the House, the required quorum to trigger impeachment proceedings under Section 188 of the Constitution.

“The number of signatories to the notice is two-thirds of the membership of the Assembly, and it is submitted pursuant to Section 188(1) and Section 188(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter read.

In accordance with constitutional requirements, the Speaker requested that Governor Fubara provide a response to the allegations within a specified timeframe. The letter reminded the Governor of his legal obligation to address the charges under the framework established by Section 188 of the Constitution.

“You are requested to respond to the allegations of gross misconduct accordingly. In doing so, your attention is drawn to the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution,” the Speaker’s letter to Fubara noted.

A similar letter was also dispatched to Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, who is similarly named in the allegations. Both leaders now face the constitutional process for responding to claims that could lead to their impeachment.
