The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced plans to conduct fresh local government elections following a directive from Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

This comes after the Supreme Court declared the previous election, held on October 5, 2024, invalid.

In response to the ruling, Governor Fubara ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take over the administration of the 23 local government councils in the state until new elections are held.

The governor also directed RSIEC to begin preparations for the polls, which will determine new leadership across the local governments.

As part of the preparations, RSIEC has scheduled a general stakeholders’ meeting to officially unveil the timetable and election guidelines. According to a statement signed by RSIEC Chairman and Chief Electoral Commissioner, Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd), the meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the RSIEC Headquarters, located at 239-243 Aba Road, Port Harcourt. The event is set to begin at exactly 2:00 PM.

The meeting will bring together various stakeholders, including leaders of registered political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, religious organizations, media representatives, professional bodies, civil society groups, NGOs, community-based organizations, and members of the electorate. The highlight of the event will be the official presentation of the election timetable and guidelines, which will serve as a roadmap for the upcoming polls.
