The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, revealed that security agencies have identified a senator as one of the key sponsors behind the ongoing anti-government protests. The disclosure came after an emergency FCT Security Council meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Wike, who previously served as the Governor of Rivers State, stated that the senator was discovered to have called on security operatives to escort a truckload of food intended for the protesters. He emphasized that relevant authorities would soon summon the senator for questioning regarding his involvement in supporting the protests.

“We had said before now that we will continue to brief the press as we monitor the protest of people who say they are protesting against bad governance and hunger in the country,” Wike remarked. He acknowledged the right to protest as a democratic entitlement but stressed the importance of adhering to the rule of law.

Wike also referenced a recent court order that, while not prohibiting protests, restricted them to the National Stadium. He expressed concern over the potential for miscreants to hijack the protests and cause destruction within the FCT, as has occurred in other states.

He stated, “You saw what happened today where some people tried to move into the Eagle Square. Miscreants may not have succeeded in what they wanted to do, but we have intelligence that they are coming out tomorrow to destroy property that will lead to loss of lives. The security agencies will not allow that.”

The minister urged all protesters to adhere to the court’s directive and conduct their demonstrations at the MKO Abiola Stadium, as specified.

Wike concluded by addressing the involvement of the senator, asserting that providing food for protesters constituted sponsorship. He assured that security agencies would take appropriate action to investigate the senator’s role in supporting activities against the government.
