Some members of the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), the Coalition of Yoruba Students, and the Yoruba Movement staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday to declare their support for the Dangote Refinery amid its ongoing dispute with oil unions.
Naijaonpoint learnt that the protesters, who converged at Iwo Road Roundabout, marched through major routes along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway, chanting solidarity songs and waving placards with inscriptions such as: “Don’t Kill Dangote Refinery,” “#StopSabotagingFuelInNigeria,” “#EndPENGASSAN,” “#EndDAPPMAN,” and “#DangoteRefineryIsANationalAsset.”
Wearing branded shirts with the slogan “Don’t Kill Dangote Refinery,” the groups described the protest as a call to the government to protect what they termed “Nigeria’s biggest industrial investment and Africa’s largest single-train refinery.”
President of NAOS, Olalere Adetunji, who addressed reporters during the march, urged President Bola Tinubu and relevant agencies to intervene swiftly.
Adetunji said, “We want to use this period to appeal to the Federal Government to protect the refinery and ensure that labour and marketers’ actions do not derail Nigeria’s move toward fuel self-sufficiency.”
Security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were deployed to the protest scene to maintain order and ensure the demonstration remained peaceful.
Naijaonpoint understands that the faceoff between the refinery and unions such as PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) has continued to spark debate, with student bodies now joining the calls for government intervention.
