THE National Assembly has announced the suspension of all legislative activities in both the Senate and House of Representatives until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
The decision was made as a mark of respect for former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London yesterday, July 13.
This was confirmed today in a statement issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative sessions are suspended,” the statement read.
Lawmakers were also encouraged to adjust their schedules in order to participate fully in the funeral rites of the late former president.
The leadership of both legislative chambers extended condolences to President Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, describing him as a symbol of integrity and a unifying figure in Nigerian politics.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who hailed from Daura in Katsina State, served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
He later returned as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.
