The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Naijaonpoint reports that Buhari died on Sunday in London, United Kingdom, after battling an undisclosed illness.

A statement issued on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, noted that the decision to suspend plenary was taken on the directive of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, who jointly agreed that the late leader deserved national respect for his contributions to the country.

“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended until Tuesday, July 22, 2025,” Ogunlana stated.

“All members of the National Assembly are urged to reschedule their engagements to enable full participation in the burial activities of the late President.”

The leadership of both chambers extended their heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, particularly the late president’s home state of Katsina, his widow Aisha Buhari, his children, and the entire Buhari family.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity,” the statement added.

Born in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985. He later returned as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.

During his presidency, Buhari had repeated foreign medical trips, some of which drew national attention.

His passing has triggered a nationwide period of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and tributes pouring in from across the political spectrum.
