President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for Tuesday, July 15, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in the United Kingdom.
Tinubu, in a tribute delivered on Sunday evening, hailed Buhari as a “patriot and statesman,” adding that the federal government would accord him full state honours in recognition of his “towering” contributions to the nation.
Tinubu said Buhari “stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential”.
The president noted that Buhari “championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn”.
As a mark of respect for the late former leader, Tinubu directed that “all national flags fly at half-staff” across Nigeria for seven days, effective immediately.
He also extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, loved ones, and the government of Katsina State.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
