CAFCL/CAFCC: Rivers United advance as Kotoko, Djoliba knock out Kwara, Abia

IT was mixed fortunes for Nigerian representatives in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup tonight, with Rivers United making progress while Kwara United and Abia Warriors were eliminated.

Rivers United edged past Les Aigles du Congo of the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 on aggregate following a victory by that same margin at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Stephen Manyo struck in first-half stoppage time to earn Rivers United progress into the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

Finidi George’s side had held Les Aigles to a 0-0 draw in DR Congo in the first leg of the tie last week.

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Nigerian Federation Cup holders Kwara United were bundled out by Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

The visitors won 1-0 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta with a strike early in the second half to advance 5-3 on aggregate, having won the first leg 4-3 in Accra.

In the same competition, Abia Warriors were beaten 1-0 in Bamako, Mali by Djoliba.

The Malian side advanced 2-1 on aggregate having held Abia Warriors to a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week in Uyo.
